    • The Torre del Serpe is one of the symbols of Otranto, shrouded in a fascinating legend that combines history and myth.

      The legend

It is said that a huge sea serpent lived at the foot of the tower.
Every night, the creature would emerge from the sea and climb to the top of the tower, where it would feed on the oil from the great lantern that remained lit to guide the ships.

One day, however, when the Saracens attempted to attack Otranto, they found the tower's light no longer burning: the serpent had drunk it all. Believing the city to be uninhabited, the invaders approached defenseless... but were caught by surprise and repelled by the Otrantines.
Thus, paradoxically, the monster that everyone feared ended up saving the city.

      Between myth and reality

    • The tower, built in Roman times and later remodeled, served as a lighthouse and lookout along the coast.

    • The “snake” could be an ancient metaphor : some scholars think it was a popular way of explaining the extinction of the lighthouse flame (consumed by the wind or the saltiness).

    • Today, the ruins of the tower remain, still visible on a panoramic promontory south of the city, immersed in Mediterranean scrub and with breathtaking views of the Adriatic.

    • Others believe that the serpent recalls pagan cults linked to fertility and the sea, which have survived in popular traditions.
