    • The historical story

    • In the summer of 1480 , Otranto was attacked by a fleet of the Ottoman Empire, led by Gedik Ahmet Pasha .

    • After a long siege, the city fell and the invaders forced all men over the age of 15 to choose between conversion to Islam or death.

    • Around 813 people (some sources speak generically of “eight hundred”) refused and were beheaded on the Colle della Minerva , just outside the city walls.

    • The first to be executed was Antonio Primaldo : tradition says that, although he had been beheaded, his body remained standing until the last of the martyrs had also been beheaded.
