The historical story
In the summer of 1480 , Otranto was attacked by a fleet of the Ottoman Empire, led by Gedik Ahmet Pasha .
After a long siege, the city fell and the invaders forced all men over the age of 15 to choose between conversion to Islam or death.
Around 813 people (some sources speak generically of “eight hundred”) refused and were beheaded on the Colle della Minerva , just outside the city walls.
The first to be executed was Antonio Primaldo : tradition says that, although he had been beheaded, his body remained standing until the last of the martyrs had also been beheaded.
