    • The Madonna dell'Altomare is one of the most deeply felt devotions in Otranto, especially among fishermen and seafarers. The small church dedicated to this Madonna is located in a panoramic position, on a hill overlooking the harbor and the Adriatic: a symbolic point, almost suspended between sky and sea.

      The legend

      According to popular tradition, many centuries ago, some sailors in distress during a storm invoked the protection of the Madonna. After promising to build a sacred place in her honor if they survived, they managed to save themselves and landed in Otranto. They kept their vow by building the church that still houses her image today.

      Other tales say that a statue of the Madonna was found in the sea by fishermen, brought ashore, and venerated as a sign of divine protection. Since then, the Madonna dell'Altomare has been considered the patron saint of sailors and those who face the perils of the sea.
