    • Ah, the legend of Idrusa is one of the most poetic linked to Otranto 🌊✨.

      The legend

It is said that long ago there lived in Otranto a beautiful girl named Idrusa . Her eyes recalled the color of the sea, and her dark hair fell like waves down her back. She was loved by all for her grace, but especially by her people, who considered her almost a magical creature.

One day, however, Otranto was threatened by invaders. To save the city, Idrusa, according to legend, threw herself from a cliff into the Adriatic Sea, sacrificing her life.
It is said that the waves welcomed her and that since then her spirit has become one with the sea, still watching over the city.

There's also a more romantic version: Idrusa fell in love with a young stranger, and when their love was thwarted, the two decided to flee by sea. A sudden storm overwhelmed them, and she disappeared beneath the waves. The people of Otranto, lest they forget her, began calling the sea in front of the city "Idrusa's sea."

      Meaning

    • Otranto, in medieval texts and epic poems, is often called Hydruntum or Idrusa , precisely in memory of this legend.

    • The myth blends love, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond between the city and its sea.
