The Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata in Otranto, built in 1088 by the Norman archbishops, is the largest religious building in Salento and a true treasure trove of art and history.
On the outside, the simple façade is striking, with its Gothic-Aragonese rose window and Renaissance portal.
Inside it houses:the famous floor mosaic (1163-1165) created by the monk Pantaleone , a “stone book” depicting the Tree of Life , biblical episodes, legends of chivalry and medieval symbols;
the chapel of the Martyrs , which preserves the relics of the 813 martyrs of Otranto (1480);
It is the spiritual heart of the city and one of the most precious testimonies of the fusion of cultures (Byzantine, Norman, Latin) that characterizes Otranto.
